everyday trash might not be so everyday while I head to Malawi for two weeks. In the meantime, check out the much toted sidebar of friends, colleagues and bizarre resources. I promise to bring back fascinating stories of African trash. Oh, and did you see the Herbert op-ed in the Times this weekend?

Have a safe trip. I look forward to those stories of African trash — will be interesting to compare them with my Latin American stories.
Best Regards,

is it okay to admit to reading trash at the checkout counter? and then tell you that I read that Madonna just adopted a boy from Malawi? And that I had no idea WHERE that was, and now I just have to find out (because you mentioned it, not because I care all that much about Madge).
I just had an odd trash experience: this older woman came by my downtown studio with odd stuff that she picks up off the streets while she walks, she has done this twice before (I dont know her, she read about me in the local newspaper), she arranges it all carefully in a clear takeout container, but this time she also gave me the Jehovah’s Witness Watchtower, which is what she is does while walking around discovering interesting junk.
OH, and THANK YOU for mentioning me on your blog! I look forward to hearing about Malawi trash.

How scary! Thanks for sharing. I can see the world Jehovah’s Wotnesses headquarters in Brooklyn (thoughtfully labelled watchtower) from my office window.
