    The free compost is a fabulous idea! Here in Chicago, the Park District offers free Christmas tree recycling. When you drop off your tree at one of 22 parks in the city, you receive, in exchange, a year’s supply of Blue Bags (the trash bags the city issues for recyclable trash collection). Some years, they have given away mulch in addition to the bags.

    Of course, this is only an incentive to those people who can be bothered to sort their recyclables from their trash, as it is not (yet) mandatory in the city.

    No worries, psychocandy, I’m all for tracking back!

    They make Christmas trees into mulch at the little park in my neighborhood (and probably at bigger parks around town), too. Now that you mention it, I wonder if you get to keep the mulch or if it goes into the parks. My guess is both.
