Attention photogs, the Nashua Telegraph wants your trash-themed pics. I’m sure this is not the last you’ll hear of this initiative.

Documenting Trash
Thursday, July 17, 2008Reblog: WebUrbanist on Trash Art
Thursday, July 10, 2008
One of the fun things about going out of town and slacking off on the trash research for a bit is that when you finally get around to rooting around for what you missed, there’s quite a bit out there. Treat yourself to this excellent WebUrbanist post highlighting 7 trash artists. You’ll see some old favorites, like the miraculous silhouettes made from trash shadows to the world renowned trash people to street art made from trash. But there are some new (to me at least) discoveries in there as well: turkeys made from scrap metal and this lovely bear head made of woven plastic bags. If you ask me, there’s nothing sweeter than a plastic bag bear.

Poubelle Paris
Sunday, July 6, 2008Check it, this French guy has built a replica of the entire city of Paris in his backyard out of, you guessed it, trash!

Poubelle
Note: The caption says he’s been working on this project for 15 years and is only 29. Talk about life’s work. Perhaps I can track him down for a Q&A on lifelong obsessions!

What better way to get back at the FBI for storming and trashing your home than to create a public art expo out of the trash they left behind?
[Apologies for the recent lapse in posts. I’m in Kenya this week and while the internet connection at the hotel is quick, my mind at the end of a long day of meetings is not!]
What’s the big idea?

The Sundance Channel is having a contest to find the next big green idea. You can vote for innovations such as S A Schimmel Gold’s portraits made of recycled junk mail by clicking here.
Dangerous Discovery

I discovered Lou’s Upcycles on ETSY when Lou commented on an everydaytrash post last week. Someone buy this bag quick, because I really don’t need another messenger bag and I really, really want this one! If I can maintain the restraint, I’ll take a stab at the DIY version later this summer.
The Trash Map
Wednesday, May 28, 2008I’m not even going to attempt to rip an image for this post. To get the full effect of this amazing interactive map of trashumentary photography, you’ll have to click here and peruse the recent contribution from Last Night’s Garbage to The New York Moon. Thanks for the tip, Joe!
Sitting on your trash
Wednesday, May 28, 2008I came across these whimsical shopping cart chairs and a whole mess of other cool shit via a Popular Fidelity link to this dense and entertaining WebUrbanist post entitled “20 Eye-Catching Pieces of ‘Recycled’ Urban Furniture: Geeky and Green Adaptive Reuse Projects”. I’m not sure I want to perpetuate a term like “adaptive resuse,” but I do want to spread the word about these artful and functional trash creations. Aside from what’s pictured here, my favorite are the couch made from an old bathtub and the abstract coffee tables made from bent bike tires.

Giraffe
Monday, May 19, 2008Remember the adorable “air bear” created by art student Joshua Allen Harris? Check out his giraffe.
And, perhaps a predecessor, in this one a German artist uses simple plastic bags in a cruder street installation.

Trash shadows
I discovered Tim Noble and Sue Webster‘s amazing trash sculptures online a while back, while traveling somewhere with slow internet and forgot to post about them when I got home. Finally, here they are, old news to some but worth a first, second and third look if you ask me. This blog has a nice collection of photos.

How rad is this “walking bike”? Check it and six other amazing recycled things here at Environmental Grafitti. Who knew Stamford had a Children’s Garbage Museum??? Summer field trip here I come.
Italian Trash Crisis Goes to EU Court
Tuesday, May 6, 2008
In my humble opinion, any article that includes the phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words” should include a picture. This one by the Cristian Science Monitor does not (oddly, they went for audio instead), but we’ll let them slide just this once since they found the only interesting angle on today’s Naples trash crisis update. It appears Italy will have to defend itself at the European Court of Justice for bad trash management…
“But what the EU is tackling through the courts, artists here have been taking on with their paintbrushes and movie cameras. From trash-themed satires of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” to music played with abandoned mattresses, these a artists are finding creative and ironic ways to express the malaise of living amid the rotting piles of waste. After years of largely unfulfilled promises from politicians, the grass-roots movement is also trying to use artwork to put forward practical solutions, such as increasing the region’s dismal recycling rates.”
