Ugh, I have so much to tell you!

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

trashyshiva.jpg Hey trashies, I’m back from my unannounced but by now unsurprising hiatus. Everydaytrash has, faithfully, run itself for the past week-plus as in the comments I’ve discovered trashonista Little Shiva and her site Visible Trash (that’s her in the head shot).  Or rather, she discovered us, either way it’s a happy day for garblogging. Anyway, check out the site. I’ve also been meaning to report back on the trash lecture I attended over a week ago now, but have loaned away the camera on which I took photos. More to come.

Last Night’s Garbage

empire.jpg People! How is it that the Star Tribune found out about a new trash photoblog before me? Looks like I and my tipsters have been dropping the ball. Good thing my mother lives in Minneapolis.

A year and a bit

Sunday, September 2, 2007

leila-budapest2.jpg So, it’s been more than one year since I first set out to upload my fascinating collection of trashy factoids in the hopes of sharing them with others and meeting fellow trashies. And in my book, this calls for an Oscar-speech-style post as a nod to the many people who helped keep this small corner of the World Wide Web trash-filled and mildly entertaining for so many days!

First off, thanks to you, dear reader, tending to everydaytrash has surpassed all of my expectations. By starting this blog, I have discovered a world of creative solutions to waste and excess, an on-line community of green thinkers, an array of artists repurposing rubbish and a slew of novice trash reporters quick to forward me the latest in solid waste happenings. Thanks for the support and keep the trash tips coming!

Special thanks are due to tipster-in-chief Kimberly, logo-designer extraordinaire Ricardo and fellow highly-specialized blogger Emily. This first year also yielded not one, but two features about everydaytrash on BlueEgg and in the Brooklyn Papers. Thanks to Jenn and Dana for making those happen.

Here’s a brief overview of (what I believe to be) the best of everdaytrash to date:

Here’s to taking trash to the next level in year two!

Love,

Leila

Blue Egg

Monday, July 30, 2007

city_robin.jpg A new site dedicated to easing people into environmentally friendly lifestyles launched over the weekend. It’s called Blue Egg and the debut issue features everydaytrash. I hope you’ll check out my essay on garblogging.

It’s a fun site complete with interviews with innovators, news stories and online quizzes. I particularly enjoyed the Q &A with Kurt Zuelsdorf, the kayak tour operator clearing trash out of Florida wetlands; the interview with a young man inspired by pot-growing friends to start a trash-to-worm-poop fertilizer business; and video footage of the Eastern Garbage Patch.

Picture ripped from the Blue Egg site.

The Times Discovers Garblogging

Weekly Compactor: Blogroll Edition

Friday, July 6, 2007

thumb-nappycollection.jpg I took an unannounced vacation this week. Please excuse the inconsistency. You’ll be happy to know that ton of rich garblogging carried on in my absensce. In particular, check out these two links:

1. Carrying around your trash for two weeks is a growing trend in New York City. The practice makes both you and others aware of how much waste each of us produces, and adds incentive to make less. Check out this Trash Talk blog from frog design where Debra Keneally is logging her experiences toting trash and where she has amassed an impressive collection of links to allies and others doing the same thing. Note: This is not the last you’ll hear of this genius fad around these parts, just the last you’ll hear of them before the weekend.

2. Keith over at the Temas blog covered two trash-related stories this past week. First, he investigates a new Mexican disposable diaper claiming to be “environmentally friendly”. Next he updates us on another PET recycling project, this one backed by the government of Brazil in an attempt to construct solar water heaters from trash.

New Look

Thursday, June 28, 2007

The answer is Ricardo Rubio of Akasha Design, in case you’re wondering who is responsible for my TRASHTASTIC new blog header.  I hope seeing such a lovely image enhances your everdaytrash experience and entices you to share the web address with potentially interested friends!

Last Fridays with Etsy Labs

Wednesday, June 27, 2007

trashion3.jpgtrashion.jpgtrashion2.jpg I’ve mentioned before that the best thing about having a trash blog is that it has helped me connect with other trashies whom I might never otherwise have stumbled upon. Take Miss Malaprop, for example, a member of the Etsy Trashion Team who found everydaytrash while promoting her crew’s upcoming trunk show.

According to Miss M:

The Etsy Trashion Team is about visualizing beauty in unconventional
objects and materials. We fabricate art, jewelry, fashion and objects
for the home from used, thrown-out & found elements. For us, trashion is
a philosophy and an ethic. It encompasses environmentalism and
innovation, and respects the human creative and healing potential.

You can check out their work on their new online shop (ah, the Internet) or by stopping by the Etsy Labs this Friday for the first of a series of trunk shows (every last Monday of the month) featuring trash to treasure pieces.

Here are the deets on the sale event:

Etsy Labs in Brooklyn NYC. (325 Gold Street, Brooklyn NYC. A/C/F to Jay St *
B/M/Q/R to Dekalb) We will have recycled art, jewelry, clothing, home
décor & more for sale, plus there will be trashion-themed films,
make-your-own trashion activities and refreshments. The trunk show is
free and open to all ages, plus the first 25 people through the door
will receive a FREE trashion team gift bag. Attendees are requested to
RSVP via email at
rsvp@etsy.com.

I know I’ll be there. Not only is this right up my alley, but it’s walking distance to boot. Big ups to my trashies in the BK, hope to see you there.

UPDATE: This weekend’s sale is of another group’s stuff.  Still trashtastic.

A trio of garblogging finds

Tuesday, June 19, 2007

gasbuilding.jpg Trash blogging is catching on. This isn’t a trend I take any credit for, just one I revel in discovering. Why this week alone:

Next on my to do list is organizing the side bars. It’s time to sort out the greens from the garbloggers, to highlight colleagues like the ladies above as well as Bring Your Own, The Temas Blog, Olympia Dumpster Divers, Gutter Envy (see beautiful photo above) and all my other peoples focused mainly on trash. Keep your eyes peeled for a redesign with better-sorted links and a fancy new logo.

Reblog: Gotham Gazette on NYC Trash Wars

Monday, June 18, 2007

protest_garbage.jpg Check out this photo and in-depth article posted on Gotham Gazette, always a prime source for trash news.  New York City’s marine transfer stations—the loading docks once used to dump trash out of dump trucks and onto barges, back when we had a working landfill just down river in Staten Island—have been at the heart of municipal sanitation politics for years now.  Every borough has at least one, but the richer neighborhoods are fighting hard to keep theirs closed.

The latest argument being tossed out there by the posher set is that using one such dock as a recycling plant would interrupt plans for a new park.  Clearly these guys don’t travel uptown all that much.

Reblog: Ecobags

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

eco-bags.jpg  I’m a little behind in reading other people’s blogs these days, but last night came across this somewhat dated but still fantastic post on Cool Hunting highlighting the latest in hip alternatives to plastic shopping bags.  Enjoy.  They’re from Japan, so you know they’re cool.

Sidebar Appreciation Day

wet trash art

Monday, March 26, 2007

gasbuilding.jpg Hands down the best part about having a trash blog is that my weekly web searches lead me to other people out there doing similarly bizarre work on trash-related matters. And sometimes, when I’m very lucky, other trashies trolling the Internet stumble accross this site and contact me. Such was the case recently when I received a very nice note from the (not so) amateur photographer behind the wonderful new art garblog, Gutter Envy. So far the artist has posted three galleries of photos, all of wet trash encountered on the streets of New York.
